Picnic on the beach and bird watching at Fernandina

FERNANDINA BEACH -- At the top tip of Amelia Island, Fort Clinch State Park winds around heavily wooded areas and is surrounded on three sides by water.

It's the perfect place for a picnic, with several choices for staging one. Arrive by car, bicycle or boat - all can be accommodated.

On the beach: If you want to go to the beach, make the first right-hand turn off to the east, to the piers and beach areas on the Atlantic. They have showers and bathhouses here, a bird-watching exhibit with educational panels (lectures are given at times; check the park's schedule when you arrive) and a number of umbrella-shaded, wooden picnic tables along the boardwalk leading to the beach.

...it's great educational lectures are provided with birdwatching...

There's bird watching on the Israel itinerary

"The classic Israel is all the holy sites, and the archeological sites," she said. "But this is a modern country. It's not the kibbutz era anymore. Things are a lot more sophisticated. Israel has become a more consumer- and comfort-oriented society," and its tourism industry has come of age too.

That means that in addition to the holy sites, today's Israeli itineraries include luxury spas on the Dead Sea, beach resorts and diving in Eilat, a wine route west of Jerusalem, bed-and-breakfasts, and hiking, Jeep tours and bird-watching.

...Israel and birdwatching...you don't see those words in the same sentence. Hopefully that will soon change :-)

Bird watch in your own backyard in Cedar Key

The sunset stateThe west coast splendor of Cedar Key offers a glimpse of a quiet way of life that is fading away in Florida.

CEDAR KEY -- This is a destination for the determined, not the sort of place you get to by making a wrong turn while driving somewhere else.Nestled along Florida's western coast -- about 50 miles southwest of Gainesville -- Cedar Key is one of those small towns that natives and longtime residents envision when they talk about "Old Florida."

The units are close enough to the water that you can do a fair amount of bird-watching from the comfort of home. Or walk to the complex's small private dock, and watch osprey and pelicans gliding over the scrub.

..wake up, have your coffee and birdwatch - sounds like my ideal...

Bird watching in Florida Keys

BY JESSICA GRESKO. ASSOCIATED PRESS

DRY TORTUGAS NATIONAL PARK, Fla. --

Many visitors to the Florida Keys snap a picture with the marker in Key West that designates the southernmost point in the United States.

Or they buy trinkets bearing images of another famous local landmark -- the Mile 0 road sign, marking the end of the Overseas Highway (U.S. 1), which begins more than 100 miles to the north.

But the Keys actually don't end in Key West. Seventy miles farther west lies a national park, the Dry Tortugas, situated on a string of islands in the Gulf of Mexico. The park offers sparkling ocean views, bird-watching and a Civil War prison, Ft. Jefferson. And although it's easily reached by plane or ferry for a day trip or overnight camping, it is one of the least-visited of all national parks, with just over 61,000 visitors a year.

The islands are renowned for the migrating birds that stop over. In fact, the area's wildlife was one of the first things that struck Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon, who discovered the string of sandy coral islands in 1513.

She says there's many outdoor activities surrounding the area including fishing at nearby Sturgeon Lake, golf, bird watching and nature trails.

...beautiful and peaceful...
